What type of lighting should I have in my aquarium?

I have about a 40-50 gallon tank. I have plants, neon tetra, white cloud, and Cory catfish. I was wondering what type of lighting should I use. Or what type of light bulbs should I use? What is a bulb that will benefit all life? Nothing that is too expensive though. Thanks.
