Frozen blueberries in a coffee cake?

I am using a new recipe for a coffee cake that says specifically "Fresh, frozen, or canned blueberries will work. Just make sure they are drained". I am wondering, if I do use frozen blueberries, do they have to be thawed out? I would think it wouldn't hurt, but also don't know that it would be necessary. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
