The Electoral College benefits rural areas. It gives a great deal of voting power to less populated states or blocs of states in the midwest including Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. It enables these less populated states to compete with big cities like New York, Los Angeles and Chicago in presidential elections.
